Australia

When:   Feb-April 2002

How Long:     10 Weeks

Background: Australia has been my favorite backpacking trip so far.  For nearly three months I circled the continent, saw some of the most stunning sites, and met some incredible people.  For the first three weeks, I traveled with four friends; Matt Denninger, Mike Killilea, Anji Prince, and Josh Wingler. They then left back to the States and I continued on for seven more weeks by myself.

The whole group enjoying a beer in Sydney, From the left Josh Wingler, myself, Anji Prince, Mike Killilea, and Matt Denninger.

Near the famous Sydney Harbor Bridge.  Great to see, but a long walk to get to.....

At the Sydney Opera House, which was enormous.

Camping on Fraser Island.  We rented a 4X4 truck for a few days and camped along the beaches.

Lake McKenzie on Frazier Island.  One of the most beautiful spots on earth.  Pure fresh water combined with pure white sand.

Stopped along the island for a scenic break.  The two pictured are Melanie and Sarah from Denmark who were traveling with us on the island.

Bungy jumping in Cairnes!  One of the greatest rushed I ever had, just don't look down or you will never jump!

On the way down! Note the pond, dead ahead.

On Fitzroy Island near the Great Barrier Reef, I took a 3 day course to get my scuba diving certification.  It was an idyllic place to train.

Diving at the Great Barrier Reef, an experience I will never forget. Did four dives out here.

Partying in Cairnes.  Lesley, on the right, was a cool Canadian who we met and eventually joined our group.

On the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, I took a tour of the coast in a helicopter.

Here's a view from the helicopter looking at the Twelve Apostles rock formations.

A kangaroo we came across.  If you look closely you can see the baby joey sticking its head out and eating.

In Western Australia, near Perth, I took surfing lessons.  Note, the water is much colder than it appears!

One case where I actually got on the board.

Stopped on our tour of Western Australia at this stunning beach.

This is on a wine-tasting tour I went on with some people I met at the hostel in Adelaide.

This spot is on the exact opposite side of the planet (Cape Leeuwin) from Washington DC and is also Australia's most southwestern point.  I couldn't get any further from home than this!

Near Darwin (Northern Territory), I went on a four day tour out into the Kakadu National Park.  Here we paused to watch the sunset and have a few beers.

Crickey! Damn big Alligator we saw near Kakadu.  This one is almost 100 years old and 15 feet long.

This shot was taken from a ledge of an escarpment we climbed in Kakadu.  *Note to self - If guide goes out on all day hikes with bare feet, don't assume I can wear sandals and get away with it!*

Back in "civilization", well Darwin at least.  Here seen with my German friend Peter I had met a few weeks earlier in Adelaide and Petra.

Night on the Town in Darwin with other backpackers I met in Kakadu.
